Millstone Country Inn, Hathersage, Derbyshire is
situated in the heart of the Peak District National Park.
From its setting in the wild beauty of the Peak Park, the
Millstone affords panoramic views across the unspoiled Hope Valley.
Yet the city of Sheffield is a mere 15 minutes drive
away, with Ladybower, Derwent and Howden reservoirs (of Dambuster fame),
Chatsworth House and the Blue John Mines all within easy reach.
The Hope Vallley is justifiably one of the most popular
tourist locations in the
Peak
District National Park.
At the head of the valley lies Castleton, and the area
around here has numerous caverns and deep valleys (or 'dales') carved out of
the local limestone rock.
The caverns are a famous and popular visitor
attraction.
On the north side of Hope Valley there is a ridge of low
hills including
Mam Tor, Back Tor and Lose Hill, which are also excellent
places for a walk, and beyond this lies Edale - the starting point of the
Pennine Way - and
Kinder Scout, which is one of the finest of the gritstone
moorlands for which the Peak District is famous.
Other fine areas for walks are
Bleaklow,
Stanage Edge the
Derwent Valley and the
Goyt Valley - all within easy reach of Hathersage.
There are many historic houses within easy reach and which
are well worth a visit. These include
Chatsworth House,
Haddon
Hall,
Lyme Hall and Park and
Hardwick Hall.
Other historic places include the famous Stone Age henge
of Arbor Low and the Plague village of
Eyam.
If you prefer Theme Parks then
Alton Towers is a
little over an hour away by car, and the many attractions of the
Matlock area (such as the
Heights of
Abraham) are closer still.
The Peak District is also a wonderful area
for many other activities, such as
cycling,
rock-climbing,
pot-holing and
hang-gliding.
